Perry is she is Chicago native who was birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first roles on television included two episodes as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne which was played by her mom. However, her parents did not permit her to perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the negative effects that stress could affect their child. Perry claimed she felt shy to act at the age of 16, but she began acting in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred to the university from Boston University. After graduating Perry went to New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought Perry back home to California which is where she discovered theater jobs. Perry starred with her mother as part of The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. The show featured the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. Perry was also featured in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. That same year the actress was selected to play a younger version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger character of her mom's. The part was offered to her through audition, despite the fact that she is a relative to the role.
